Paper and clothing originally used different agricultural fibres for manufacturing. The cost versus profit margin was too great because of the conditions that controlled the supply of the materials. This was an issue until 1890 when a German inventor created the first mechanical pulp machine. After that he was able to create wood pulp from lumber. With the addition of chemical processing that was added a short time later the paper industry was forever changed. As technology progressed more breakthroughs were made and the results are the processing plants that are running today.
In order to effectively extract the fibres required from lumber products; present mills use chips instead of full logs. Trees go through a process called woodchipping. This procedure strips the log of its outer coating in order to utilize the inner sections of the log. The bark that is left over is recycled and used to generate steam as an energy alternative for the mill.
Present day mills use two main processes for manufacturing chips. They are mechanical and chemical. During the mechanical process uses a refining machine to grind the chips into a paste like substance. There are two types of mechanical processing. The first is refiner mechanical pulp; which only uses grinder plates to process the woodchips. The second is called thermomechanical pulp; during this procedure water is added to the refining process which causes the woodchips to generate steam and reduces the damage to the fibres.
The second process that is used for extracting the fibres form woodchips is the chemical process. This procedure combines woodchips and chemicals in containers referred to as digesters that use heat and chemicals to break down the molecular properties of the woodchips without seriously degrading the fibres. The Kraft process is the dominant method used in the industry today.
When one thinks about the pulp industry they generally do not realize that it is used for more things than paper, newspaper and toilet paper. In fact one of the ingredients that are extracted during the procedure is Celulose. This compound is mixed with certain chemicals to be used in toys, sports equipment and even rope. So there are multiple benefits to the use of this material not just the obvious ones.
In an effort to keep the use of lumber down a process for recycling paper was introduced. The formula is called Deinking and uses chemical agents to break down and erase any inscriptions and foreign items from the paper. Froth flotation is the primary process that is used in Europe today. Another type of recycling method used is Wash deinking. This method is more commonly used when creating tissue.
With the environment on every ones minds the use of trees when creating pulp for manufacturing does not sit well with everyone. Since this is a topic of discussion in some groups there has been talk of using an alternative source to generate pulp. It is a throwback idea to the early days when paper and items were manufactured from agricultural fibres. Unfortunately this is not a very good option due to the increased costs it would create to produce items using these materials.
Wood pulp has expanded into many markets and because of that reason it has become a pivotal part of our world. Tree farms have been created for the growing and harvesting of lumber in order to assist in the demand for materials. Reclamation of fallen or underwater lumber by private logging companies is also helping fill the supply and demand in the lumber industry.
