The morning is foggy and quite crisp. You’ve been out here in the scrub for the last three hours, well before dawn. You live by the mantra that the “early bird gets the worm.” Well, today the early hunter is going to get the buck and by the look of the scrapes you’ve seen, it’s going to be a big one. You give a grunt through your deer call, and settle down into the foliage around you with your rifle at the ready. Your breathing stills as you see the big buck move into the clearing, its dark eyes looking for a challenger. You wipe the dampness off your hands onto one of your hunting t-shirts, and line up your shot.
That’s what the whole thing is for, fellow hunters. You can buy all of your fancy equipment and have a whole closet full of hunting t-shirts, but none of it matters until you experience the feeling of that fired shot that takes down a magnificent example of the deer species. If you’ve never felt that complicated, wonderful sensation then you will never understand why hunters do what they do. Our very existence depended upon our ability to track, hunt, and kill animals for their food. There is a sacredness to the act that no one but the hunters of the world understand.
The killing of an animal isn’t what the whole process is all about. There are those who would have you believe that every man with a gun and some hunting t-shirts is a sociopath murderer who torture animals for fun. The truth is that when a hunter makes a kill, that they strive to make the cleanest kill possible. Through the chest, through the heart, and through both lungs. The animal is dead before it even has a chance to register that it is in pain. The real meaning behind the hunt is because in many people, there is a need to satisfy that ancient impulse to dominate nature and to hunt for your food. The same people who condemn hunters, usually go home to eat cows or chicken slaughtered in inhumane conditions.
You have to understand that killing game in the field is much more challenging than killing animals in a slaughterhouse. I can’t just put on my hunting t-shirts, walk into a forest, and shoot something after a brief search. Hunting is rigorous and straining on the mind and body. Hours are spent with your muscles tensed and ready for action. You may think that outsmarting a dumb deer is easy, but they have a survival instinct that has been honed over generations of animals surviving in hostile environments. It is brainpower against animal ingenuity, and the scales are much more balanced than you would believe.
There is nothing that really compares to the satisfaction I feel when I bring home my own meat. I am not partial to bringing home trophies, but I am very much excited when I’m able to bring home a carcass to share with friends and family. Venison is delicious and I have enough of it to eat on it all year long. When prepared correctly, it can be some of the most delicious and savory meat you can try. I like to prepare mine by smoking the shoulders for some BBQ of a different taste and texture than pork. I may wear an apron when I’m cooking, but I wear my hunting t-shirts underneath. In fact, I’d like to challenge you to finding me not wearing one of my hunting t-shirts. I’m just a little proud of what I do.
